With Christmas just around the corner, last minute gift shopping is in full frenzy, and getting the right gift for a special someone can be extremely stressful. Since, many factors can play into what gifts to get, we interviewed real couples at Richview to find out just what teenage couples should be gifting each other and to lend a hand with last minute gift shopping.

Budgeting

Here’s what staff and students had to say about how much you should spend on a significant other this Christmas.

There are a range of answers to our question, due to various reasons. For new couples(or for a cheaper range)we were provided a range around $20–30. The average response we received was in the range of $30–100, which would be typical for an average high school couple, especially those with an income. This range is flexible and gives you options that vary in price and quality depending on what you’re looking for. The highest response we recorded was from $300–400. This amount would be more appropriate for those with full-time jobs and/or those who are in committed or long-term relationships.

On average, we would say an appropriate range is $50–75, but it all depends on where you are in your relationship.

Gift Ideas

After being asked about gift budgeting, Richview gave gift ideas that matched reasonably within range. Clothing, specifically hoodies seem to be the hottest gift this year. Not only will you think of your significant other when wearing the hoodie, but it’s extremely practical with the cold winter that’s creeping up on Toronto. Skincare, haircare, and makeup was a runner up since its prices can range from $10-$100.Not only is it price flexible, but you can buy just about anything in the selfcare department and will be useful. It’s definitely something that can be integrated into a daily routine and it shows that you remember the little things about their life. Speaking of little things, small and meaningful items were a constant mention from these couples. Sometimes, less is more. Being thoughtful and sentimental is always a good direction when thinking of your partner.

Of course, when in doubt, a giftcard to their favorite store always brings a smile to their face. Expecting presents When asked how long a couple should be together before buying each other Christmas gifts, the Richview population had various responses. The shortest time frame we received as an answer was about 1 month. The justification being that, it shouldn’t matter how long you’re together, if you like the person, giving a gift is ideal. While the majority of the people asked responded with a time frame between 4-6 months as their minimum, (with the exception of a few who replied over a year), on average, most people at Richview would purchase gifts for their significant others if they’d been together for a few months. In the end, however, it all depends on the couple, the relationship, and what you feel most comfortable with.

Does Xmas Put Too Much Pressure on Couples?

This was a question we were dying to hear from, as the holidays can be extremely stressful for everyone, when trying to find the perfect present. While some claim that online shopping has made everything easier with regards to gift baskets etc, many couples indicated that it does put on a lot of pressure and stress. Many of the concerns consisted of getting something their significant other might not like(especially being the first Christmas for many couples).

Not only are they worried about picking the wrong gift, they’re afraid of being outperformed by their significant other since a bad gift can guilt more when one receives a great gift.

Another factor that has some of these couples in a jam is affordability and income, since not everyone has time for a job. Balancing school and work isn’t for everyone, so the biggest stress on some couples’ minds during this time is money. Students are scrambling to figure out how to make money and how to get the perfect gift on a budget. Afraid of being judged for how much they’re able to spend, insecurities can bloom. In order to help relieve some of the pressure, we compiled a list of a few last minute gift ideas that will suit any budget and any couple.
